Welcome to Diary of a Home Ed Kid: Our Family’s Journey Begins

Hello and welcome to Diary of a Home Ed Kid! I’m a bit nervous but excited to share our family’s journey into the world of home education. This is the space where I’ll be documenting our adventures, the ups and downs, and everything in between as we navigate this crazy life decision.

Let me introduce our family

There’s me, the one who originally discovered and has done most of the research about home education. I have a background in Early Years education but my career is as a content creator and I’m a birth worker. My husband is the patient and supportive dad who’s always ready with a silly joke or an impromptu science lesson. He has his own business. We’ve been together since we were kids ourselves and this was a BIG decision for us as a family. Husband was not on board with home ed to begin with—a post for another day!

Then there’s our energetic son, J, who’s 4 years old and would be about to start school this September. J was diagnosed with a progressive eye condition this year. We discovered that he had been living with low vision since birth and his condition has other health concerns. But since J has gotten his glasses, his vision has improved and we’ve noticed his confidence come on massively. This wasn’t the reason behind our decision though! committed to home education about a month before J’s diagnosis. This just concreted that we’d made the right choice.

And then there’s our sweet and spirited daughter G, who at 20 months old, is already eager to keep up with her big brother. She is a typical second born and into everything. It’s funny how we’ve known she would never go to school from the start. It’s a completely different situation than with J because up until a year ago, we assumed he would always go off to school. With G I feel a whole level of freedom in her development. And it shows in her fierce personality .

And last but certainly not least, we have our Spanish Water Dog Cooper. He lives up to the breed’s characteristics of being very intelligent, loyal and LOUD af! He’s a curly haired fluff ball who has completed our family. For now at least.

Why did we choose home education?

That’s a story for our next post, but I can tell you it wasn’t a decision we made lightly. We’re diving into this new adventure with a mix of excitement, curiosity, and just a touch of anxiety—because, let’s be honest, this is uncharted territory for us!

This blog will be a place where I share the real, unfiltered moments of our life of home education. Expect a lot of laughter, a few tears, and plenty of learning—not just for the kids, but for all of us. Whether it’s discovering a new favorite book, tackling a tricky learning concept, or simply figuring out how to keep curious toddlers entertained ALL DAY EVERY DAY (sigh). I’ll be sharing it all here.

I hope you’ll enjoy our page, whether you’re a home educator, considering it for your own family, or just curious about what this life looks like. There’s so much we’re excited to explore, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.

Stay tuned for our next post where I’ll share more into why we’re choosing home education.
